Wilkes3 was at the time of installation the most powerful supercomputer for academic research in the UK, and is an upgrade to Wilkes2. It is comprised of 80 nodes each with 4 Nvidia A100 GPUs and achieved position 3 in the June 2021 Green500 list, and position 100 in the June 2021 Top500 list.

System Features

Nationally available infrastructure for GPU compute via EPSRC and Industry.

80 nodes based on the Dell PowerEdge XE8545.

Each node contains

2 x AMD EPYC 7763 64-Core processors

1000 GiB RAM

Dual Rail Mellanox HDR200 InfiniBand

4 x Nvidia A100 SXM4 80GB

Connects to the 5PB/s LustreFS shared with Peta4.

Additional Information

The Wilkes3 platform has been co-designed with DELL EMC and NVIDIA.

A non-exhaustive list of research areas expected to particularly benefit from Wilkes3 includes:

  • Turbulence simulations (relevant to the aeronautical industry).
  • Combustion simulations (relevant to the automotive industry).
  • Analysis of large data sets from the Internet of Things (relevant to smart cities research).
  • Materials modeling research.
  • Medical applications, including:
    • Analysis of large medical image data sets.
    • Population-scale gene variant analysis.
    • Real-time medical analytics for use in hospital decision support systems.
