Research Computing Services at the University of Cambridge has an exciting opportunity for an excellent candidate to join the Research Software Engineering (RSE) team as an HPC Consultant. There are two permanent positions available and one position offered on a Fixed Term Contract basis of 4 years.
The successful applicant will develop, improve and maintain advanced software applications which power world leading research in areas such as epidemiology, astronomy, particle physics, medical imaging and materials chemistry using current and next generation exascale supercomputing technologies.
The Research Computing Service runs the UK's most powerful academic supercomputers, the Cambridge Service for Data-Driven Discovery, and the new Dawn supercomputer, a multi-million pound investment comprising a cutting-edge hardware and software environments.
The role will involve working on a wide range of projects collaborating with world leading researchers at the university, nationally and internationally. The role will be key in delivering a range of projects by providing knowledge, skills and advice to develop and improve high-quality applications and workflows that will enable research across a wide range of disciplines.
The successful candidate will have experience of some or all of the following areas:
- Writing and maintaining high-performance application code, with experience with the key languages commonly used in scientific computing such as C, C++ (preferred), Fortran or Python.
- Experience with at least one of the frameworks used to exploit large, modern parallel computers such as MPI, OpenMP or CUDA is highly desirable.
- A high-level knowledge of the hardware (i.e. CPUs, GPUs and low-latency interconnects) that make up a modern supercomputer along with experience of working in the Linux software environment.
- Deep learning, machine learning, and artificial intelligence is a growing demand. We are particularly keen on candidates with knowledge in these areas.

Alongside code development, enthusiasm to interact with users of the local and national supercomputing resources to solve real, cutting-edge research problems will be key so any experience of consultancy, teaching or user-support will be a plus.
The position will require working with a large range of stakeholders and good organisational and communication skills are key to the role.
The most important aspect of this role is an enthusiasm to learn and develop technical skills.
